How to Compress a Video Without Ruining the Quality
1. Remove footage you do not need

2. Match the resolution to the real destination
A 4K file is wasteful when the video will appear as a small demonstration inside a blog post. On the other hand, reducing a screen recording to 480p can make interface text impossible to read.
Use 1080p when clarity matters and the video will be watched full screen. Consider 720p for quick previews, simple talking-head clips, or situations where file size matters more than fine detail. Always inspect screen recordings carefully before lowering their resolution.
3. Keep the original frame rate unless you have a reason to change it
If you recorded at 30 frames per second, exporting at 30 is normally a sensible choice. Reducing 60 fps to 30 fps can save data, but fast movement may look less smooth. Increasing a 30 fps source to 60 does not create genuine missing motion detail and may increase the file unnecessarily.
YouTube’s official upload guidance also recommends encoding content at the same frame rate at which it was recorded.
4. Use H.264 when compatibility is the priority
H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 container remains the practical compatibility choice for broad playback. Newer codecs may create smaller files at similar visual quality, but the receiving platform, browser, device, editor, or client system must support them.
Use H.265 or AV1 when you understand the destination and have tested playback. Do not save 30% on file size only to create a file your client cannot open.
5. Lower bitrate gradually
Bitrate has a direct effect on file size. Lowering it reduces data, but aggressive reductions create blockiness, smearing, banding, and loss of detail.
For YouTube uploads, the platform’s current reference recommendations include 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p SDR and 5 Mbps for 720p SDR. Those are YouTube upload references, not universal laws for every blog or email video, but they provide a useful quality-oriented starting point.
For a downloadable review copy, you may be able to go lower. For fast motion, detailed screen recordings, or noisy low-light footage, you may need more.
6. Use constant quality when the final size is flexible
Constant-quality modes let the encoder spend more data on difficult scenes and less on simple scenes. This is often a sensible choice when you want efficient visual quality and do not have a strict upload limit.
Use target bitrate or exact-size compression when the final file must stay below a specific limit.
7. Do not ignore audio
A very high audio bitrate wastes space in a spoken tutorial. Stereo AAC around 128 kbps is often a reasonable starting point for speech and general online content, while music-focused material may deserve more. Removing an unnecessary audio track can also reduce the file.
8. Test a difficult section first
Preview motion, small text, gradients, hair, water, leaves, shadows, and low-light scenes. These areas often reveal compression damage before a simple static shot does.
A Simple File-Size Formula
You can estimate the file size when you know the combined video and audio bitrate:
Approximate size in MB = total bitrate in Mbps × duration in seconds ÷ 8
For example, a five-minute video at a combined bitrate of 4 Mbps is approximately:
4 × 300 ÷ 8 = 150 MB
The actual file may differ slightly because of container overhead, variable bitrate, and how the encoder handles the content, but the formula is useful when planning.
To reverse the calculation and find a target total bitrate:
Target bitrate in Mbps = desired size in MB × 8 ÷ duration in seconds
Suppose a 10-minute video must stay below 100 MB:
100 × 8 ÷ 600 = approximately 1.33 Mbps total
You would need to reserve part of that total for audio, leaving the rest for video. At that point, a lower resolution may preserve the appearance better than forcing a high-resolution video into an extremely low bitrate.

YouTube’s current guidance recommends MP4, H.264, progressive scan, variable bitrate, and the original recorded frame rate. Its reference bitrate for standard-frame-rate 1080p SDR is 8 Mbps, while 720p is 5 Mbps.
